He is also the author of a slim volume, part of the 331/3 series issued by Bloomsbury, called “Master of Reality” (2008), about the 1971 Black Sabbath album of the same title. Writing in The New Yorker, Sasha Frere-Jones has plausibly called him “America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist.” He sings, plays guitar and writes wordy and offbeat songs for the Mountain Goats, the indie band of which he is frequently the sole member. Darnielle himself occupies multiple worlds. Sean developed Trace Italian in part while temporarily blind in the hospital, “faced with the choice of either inventing internal worlds or having no world at all to inhabit.” To find shelter amid a blasted landscape, the characters must reach this illusory fortress. “The trace italienne involved triangular defensive barricades branching out around all sides of a fort,” Sean says, “stars within stars, visible from space, one layer of protection in front of another for miles.” The game is called Trace Italian, after a type of medieval fortification. ![]()
